{\noindent Dear Ms. Plass:}
As one guinea pig to another, we are sending you, under separate cover, 1)
the December 1981 pre-release version of ``The WEB System of Structured
Documentation'' by Donald E. Knuth, and 2) a magnetic tape containing the
following files written in 8-bit ascii at 1600 bpi: TANGLE.PAS,
TANGLE.WEB, WEAVE.WEB, and WEBHDR.TEX.
The hard-copy report was written in WEB and prepared for printing through
the use of the WEAVE program and of TEX. Appendices to this report
contain the complete WEAVE-produced listings of TANGLE and of WEAVE
itself. Appendix G, on page 158, outlines the procedure that may be
necessary to install the WEB system on your computer.
As for the magnetic tape:
The TANGLE.PAS file is in upper case, broken into lines not exceeding 72
characters per line at PASCAL-acceptable places. The only concession to
readability is that the breaks are made after semicolons when this is
possible. An attempt has been made to make this file reasonably
system independent but some system dependencies may still remain.
TANGLE.WEB and WEAVE.WEB are, of course, written in WEB and may also have
to be modified to meet the particular requirements of your computer.
WEBHDR.TEX is the WEB header file that contains specific formatting
information needed by TEX to process the output from WEAVE. In addition to
TEX you will also have to have a BASIC.TEX file on your system.
We would appreciate it, if you could send us a check for $25, if you have
not already done so, to help defray the expenses of making and sending the
tape. We would also appreciate having the tape returned to us as soon as
you have transcribed it, and, above all, we would like your comments and
suggestions.
